Around May 2001, I received a phone call from my dear friend Eli. She and her musical partner Jane, had formed a band called “Sparksfly” and were putting together their first album. They had decided the cd booklet should feature a visual for each song. They wanted each song to be interpreted by a different artist. Eli was calling to invite me to interpret one of the songs.

I received a package in the mail about a month later containing a rough version of their song “Surfacing” and the lyrics.

Once I had a chance to listen to the song and read the lyrics, Eli and I had a chat about our ideas. She had some visual symbolic ideas already, and so we jammed out some concepts over the phone.
